In 1980, at one of Connie Wald's customary supper parties, Audrey was introduced to a handsome Dutch actor named Robert Wolders who, coincidentally, had grown up just a short distance from Audrey in Holland.  They'd experienced many of the same difficulties during the war and quickly became loving confidants. 

Over time, the two discovered many other things they had in common, including gardening, music, art, a keen sense of humor and the love of Jack Russell terriers who eventually became their constant companions.
